If the DM donesn't want their boss monsters stunned, but they don't want the monk to feel like they wasted the use of ki, the DM could give Stunning Strike an alternate affect on such a monster Instead of stunned, the monster has some of its special powers shut down for a turn, or it's AC goes down temporarily, etc.SIG SAUER’s TANGO6T series of riflescopes has rapidly become the U.S. I personally just made incoporeal undead immune to Stun (because they don't have a body to get stunned). If they think a monster should be resistant to stunning strike, or immune to stun, or should have ledgendary resistances to shrug off CC, they can give the monster that trait. The DM can also just change how monsters work, so they work better for their game. Does a Monk look different from everyone else under detect magic because they can harness their ki? Suddenly Monks lose most of their powers in an anti-magic zone. Then apply magic resistance or other effects as appropriate.Ī DM could decide Ki is in fact magic in their setting/game (not just a mystical energy without additional rules) but then you have to apply that rule consistently, so you need to deal with all the edge cases that causes. So the official answer is magic resistance would not apply to Stunning Strike. The text of Stunning Strike does not say it’s magical. According to Sage Advice, Ki is not magic, the description of it being magical/mystical is fluff not a statement of mechanics.
